Abstract
Cefuroxime axetil is an oral pro-drug of cefuroxime, a second generation cephalosporin with a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity, including penicillinase and beta-lactamase producing bacteria.
Cefuroxime axetil when given orally produces high prolonged serum levels of cefuroxime. The concentration in the CSF is about 10% of the level in serum.
43 patients with bacterial sinusitis took cefuroxime axetil 250mg twice daily by mouth and the following results were obtainedNo bacterial growth in 88%(33/43) of patients after 8-10 days of treatment,
-72% were clinically free of symptoms after 8-10 days and 95% after 16-18 days of treatment
-No side effects were noted during the study
On the basis of this study, we conclude that cefuroxime axetil is an effective antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial sinusitis.
